This is typically caused by abrasive particles in the product, inadequate lubrication at the packing interface, or a worn piston with surface damage transferring to the bore. Even light scoring can compromise the seal between the plunger packing and the bore wall, leading to pressure loss and product leakage.
2. Corrosion and Pitting
Corrosion manifests as pitting, roughening, or discolouration of the internal surfaces. It is commonly caused by processing aggressive or acidic products without adequate material specification, exposure to cleaning chemicals (particularly chloride-containing sanitisers on standard stainless steel), or prolonged downtime without proper preservation. Pitting creates harbourage points for bacteria — a critical concern in dairy and pharmaceutical applications.
3. Pressure Leakage
If you observe a gradual decline in homogenisation pressure that cannot be resolved by replacing sigilii and packings, the cylinder block bore may be out of tolerance. Pressure leakage past the plunger packing is often the first operational symptom of bore wear. Before concluding that the block is worn, always check the condition of the piston surface and packing components first, as these are more common failure points.
4. Visible Erosion at Port Connections
The inlet and outlet ports of the cylinder block are subjected to high-velocity product flow and pressure pulsation. Refurbishment — typically involving re-honing or re-boring the internal cylinder surfaces — can be a cost-effective option when the scoring or wear is superficial and within re-machinable tolerances, the block material is structurally sound with no corrosion pitting deeper than 0.1 mm, port connection faces can be re-machined to restore proper sealing, and the overall block dimensions remain within the manufacturer’s specified tolerances after machining.
A properly refurbished cylinder block can provide several more years of reliable service. However, it is essential that the refurbishment is carried out by a specialist with experience in high-pressure homogeniser components and access to the correct dimensional specifications.
When Replacement Is the Better Choice
Replacement should be considered when bore wear exceeds the maximum allowable diameter for re-honing, deep pitting or corrosion has compromised the material integrity, cracking or fatigue marks are visible (no matter how small), the block has already been refurbished to its maximum oversize limit, or the cost of refurbishment approaches 60–70% of the price of a new block.
In practice, many operators find that replacing a severely worn block with a new, precision-machined unit is more economical than repeated refurbishment — especially when factoring in the risk of unplanned failure and the associated production losses.
New vs Second-Hand Cylinder Blocks
For cost-conscious operations, second-hand or refurbished cylinder blocks can be an attractive option. However, there are important considerations:
New cylinder blocks come with known material certification, precise dimensional tolerances, a full service life ahead, and manufacturer warranty. They are the safest choice for critical applications in dairy, pharmaceutical, and food production where hygiene and traceability are paramount.
Second-hand blocks can offer significant cost savings (typically 40–60% less than new), but the remaining service life is uncertain. Always request dimensional inspection reports, material certificates, and a documented service history before purchasing a used compression block. Be particularly cautious about second-hand blocks from unknown sources, as internal defects may not be visible externally.
Material Considerations: Why Forged Stainless Steel Matters
Modern high-quality cylinder blocks are manufactured from forged stainless steel — typically AISI 316L or duplex grades for demanding applications. Forging provides several advantages over cast alternatives:
